Track Name: Grave Need
Black witch bones, scarred by flame,
Roll and turn in the blessed wind and rain.
Wise old skulls, be thou free
From your graves deep beneath the rolling sea.
Charmers wake from cold sleep, sound your chants,
Let those who would forget weep.
Diviners come, cast the stones, read the leaves,
Leave us not to Fate alone.
Keepers of forgotten ways, open the gate,
Lead us through the cold grey haze.
Rhymers spines turn the stones, shed the clay,
Let new verse come from thy bones.
Black witch bones, scarred by flame,
Roll and turn in the blessed wind and rain.

Quicken to me
For songs and spells I have great need;
For twig of oak; for sprig of ash; for twist of thorn;
For ghost-white stag; for snow-white horn; for bone-white bird;
For the dreaming; for the undead; for the unborn.
Quicken to me.
I have grave need.
Quicken to me.
Track Name: Poppit
They'll burn us like witches.
They'll hang us like thieves.
All they'll give to us is graves.

They'll bleed us like pigs.
They'll whip us like slaves.
All they'll give to us is graves.

They pay us in promises.
They tax our dreams.
All they'll give to us is graves.

They lock us in cages.
They bind us with wages.
All they'll give to us is graves.

They'll burn us like witches.
They'll hang us like thieves.
All they'll give to us is graves.

We'll burn like lanterns;
We'll hang like stars;
And we'll haunt them from our graves.

And we'll haunt them from our graves.
Track Name: A Mirror for Death
Run! You must run!
Do not let them catch you,
For if they do,
They will surely kill you.

Run! Run and hide!
Do not let them see you.
Their eyes are death.
They want to gaze upon you.

Under the sun,
You must hide in shadows.
Beneath the moon,
They will still pursue you.

Under their wings,
Watch the hunted scatter;
Locked in their sight,
Bringing death upon you.

And a thousand miles away
The hunters smile and draw their bows.

Run! You must run!
Do not let them catch you,
For if they do,
They will surely kill you.

Run! Run and hide!
Do not let them see you.
Their eyes are death.
They want to gaze upon you.

O don't you see -
We can't outrun an arrow -
But, as you know,
They cannot stop the winds' blow.

And should we fall
In the gaze of hunters,
To the face of Death,
We shall hold a mirror.
Track Name: Vampire
Here's a stone for your mouth;
A stone to block your forked tongue;
A stone to stop your false words;
Here's a stone all for your mouth.

Here's a nail for your arm;
A nail to hold you in your place;
A nail to keep you in your grave;
Here's a nail all for your arm.

And this desolate grave is better than you gave.
And this final reward is more than you deserve.

Here's a stake for your heart;
A stake to drain your sick blood;
A stake to stop your grim ways;
Here's a stake all for your heart.

Here's an axe for your neck;
An axe to snap your old spine;
An axe to make sure you don't rise;
Here's an axe all for your neck.

And this desolate grave is better than you gave.
And this final reward is more than you deserve.
Track Name: The Jesters Harp
On high the moon is laughing
All at the setting sun
And the moths are dancing
For butterflies are done.

Crack the mirror.
Break the glass.
All things come and all things pass.
Flowers in the morning sway,
Open, bloom, and then by evening fade.

Godfather Death a candle snuffs -
Orange flame is now just grey smoke -
And if we cry, "Hold! Enough!"
Then we have lost the joke.

We shall laugh and dance like fools;
Just like jesters shall we sing;
Until we put a sharpened blade
Through the black heart of the king.

On high the moon is laughing
Above the rolling waves
And the ghosts are smiling
Upon the quiet graves.
Track Name: A Dead Calling
On the other side of evening
Where men rest, asleep and dreaming,
Waiting for the light of morning,
Feeling safe, in slumber turning,

We stand in the moon-cast shadows.
Incense smoke on the unseen breeze blows.
Night birds sing and night flowers bloom.
On our breath blossom secret runes.

Spread the cards - let the wind take them.
Toss the bones - let the stars wake them.
Toll the bell - let the clear tone sound.
Call the dead - listen to them all around.

And on the other side of evening
Nightmares crawl upon the dreaming
Who cry out in their slumber turning.
See them shake - praying for the morning.
Track Name: Witchwalker
O, he stands upon the hill,
A man all dressed in skin.
He’s staring right at me
All through the twisting trees.

O, he holds a wilted bloom
All in his cold right hand.
He brought it from some grave
All through the twisting trees.

O, he has a mangy dog
It’s walking next to him
Upon it’s two hind legs.
I wish I couldn’t see.

O, he’s speaking from the dark.
He’s saying someone’s name.
I fear he calls to me
All from the twisting trees.

O, there’s scratching on the glass.
This man with eyes so deep
Is looking in at me.
I wish I couldn’t see.

Now, I’m walking through the door.
He wants to talk to me
And I will go with him
All through the twisting trees.
Track Name: Up-Hill
Does the road wind up-hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day's journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.

Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you standing at that door.

Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labour you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, beds for all who come.
Track Name: The Mouthless Dead
When you see millions of the mouthless dead
Across your dreams in pale battalions go,
Say not soft things as other men have said,
That you'll remember. For you need not so.
Give them not praise, for deaf how should they know
It is not curses heaped on each gashed head?
Nor tears. Their blind eyes see not your tears flow.
Nor honor. It is easy to be dead.
Say only this, 'They are dead,' then add thereto
'Yet many a better one has died before.'
Then scanning all the o'ercrowded mass,
Should you perceive one face that you loved heretofore,
It is a spook. None wears the face you knew.
Great Death has made all his forevermore.
Track Name: Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier
Here I sit on Buttermilk Hill.
Who can blame me cryin' my fill?
And every tear would turn a mill.
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

Me-o-my, I loved him so.
Broke my heart to see him go.
Only time will heal my woe.
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

I'll sell my rod, I'll sell my reel.
Likewise, I'll sell my spinning wheel,
And buy my love a sword of steel.
Johnny has gone for a soldier.

I'll dye my dress, I'll dye it red,
And through the streets I'll beg for bread,
For the lad I love from me has fled.
Johnny has gone for a soldier.
Track Name: Bird of Prey
Did you cry
When the talons closed ' round your eyes?
Did you weep
When you felt the sharpened beak?
The bird of prey
Carried your heart away,
And yet you stay
Faithful in your decay.

Faithful in your decay;
Faithful in the deceit;
Faithful in your demise
Beneath the red sunrise.

Fire falls
Here around us all.
Arrows rain -
Bring the endless bane.
The bird of war
Always asks for more
And yet you stand
Faithful in its command.

Faithful in its command;
Faithful in its deceit;
Faithful in your demise
Beneath the red sunrise.
Track Name: Rats in the Cupboard
There are rats in the cupboard eating your food;
Crows on the wire turning your mood;
The goat’s in the window staring at you;
Coyotes creeping under the moon;
A stranger is walking on your land;
Children are reading books that are banned;
Someone picked an apple from your tree;
You can yell and stomp and scream
But you can’t unring the bells
And you can’t turn back the clock.

The mice in the walls chew holes in your home;
The bats in the attic won’t leave you alone;
The kids on your street are up to no good;
Call the police and fix ‘em good!
The bones in your closet are haunting your days;
Worms in the bible eating the page;
A dog is digging pits in your yard;
You can’t ever let down your guard
And you can’t unring the bells
And you can’t turn back the clock.
Track Name: Germinal
GERMINAL!—The Field of Mars is plowing,
And hard the steel that cuts, and hot the breath
Of the great Oxen, straining flanks and bowing
Beneath his goad, who guides the share of Death.

GERMINAL!— The Dragon's teeth are sowing,
And stern and white the sower flings the seed
He shall not gather, though full swift the growing;
Straight down Death's furrow treads, and does not heed.

GERMINAL!— The Helmet Heads are springing
Far up the Field of Mars in gleaming files;
With wild war notes the bursting earth is ringing.
* * *
Within his grave the sower sleeps, and smiles.

Track Name: Icons
As you walk in silent thought,
See the statues of the saints -
Frozen life to mark a death -
Holy ones who watch and wait.

Paint them black to match the night.
Paint them black to change the hymns.
Paint them black to kill the lies.
Paint them black to live again.

Drape their shoulders with cloaks of thorn.
Bless their heads with crown of horn.

Make the new all old again.
Sew the start onto the end.

Make new myths of your own.
Twist old gods from the new.
Make new saints from black mold.
From fallen oak an alter hew.
Track Name: Monuments
As I walk the grey fields of the dead,
Crossing streams that with blood did run red,
Through the dreams that were lost in the smoke
By the young men who never awoke

I see stones that still tell of their deeds:
Brave the dead in victory or defeat -
But no words for all those who had no choice:
All the poor men not given a voice.

See the generals upon their great mounts,
Looking solemn, and pompous, and proud -
But let us not forget the bleak truth:
Wealthy men making pawns of the youth.

And so blow the cold winds of war,
As they ever have blown before.
Upon this and every shore
The battle burden falls on the poor.

Now I walk the grey fields of the dead,
Crossing streams that with blood did run red,
Just to spit in a stone general’s eye
For all the poor men he sent off to die.
Track Name: Blood on the Snow
By the blood that colors snow;
By the hand that falls alone;
By the caw of the carrion crow
Which tears dead flesh from bone;

By the eye torn from the skull;
By the silence of the cull;
By the shrieking of the call,
With dying breath, “can this be all?”

By the silver light of moon;
By the last breath breathed to soon;
A parting bow; a final swoon -
Leave white bone, your final rune.

By crawling worm and flitting fly;
By circling birds all in the sky;
By the beetles that replaced my eye;
I’ve come to sing - I’ve already died.
Track Name: Written in Red
Written in red their protest stands,
For the Gods of the World to see;
On the dooming wall their bodiless hands
Have blazoned “Upharsin,” and flaring brands
Illumine the message: “Seize the lands!
Open the prisons and make men free!”
Flame out the living words of the dead
Written-in-red.

Gods of the World! Their mouths are dumb!
Your guns have spoken and they are dust.
But the shrouded Living, whose hearts were numb,
Have felt the beat of a wakening drum
Within them sounding - the Dead Men’s tongue -
Calling: “Smite off the ancient rust!”
Have beheld “Resurrexit,” the word of the Dead,
Written-in-red.

Bear it aloft, O roaring flame!
Skyward aloft, where all may see.
Slaves of the world! Our cause is the same;
One is the immemorial shame;
One is the struggle, and in One name -
Manhood - we battle to set men free.
“Uncurse us the land!” burn the words of the Dead,
Written-in-red.
Track Name: While the Stars Burn Out
Stand still while the stars burn out.
Wait here until the rivers dry.
Hold still while they take your heart.
Smile while they steal your time.

And when your candle flame is smoke,
And joins the smog on which you choke,
And black rains the lands do soak,
Then they'll ask you for your hope.

Some shake in their chains.
Some rattle in their rage.
Some push against the cage
And scream this was not our choice.

Wait until the sun has burned out.
Wait until the fish have died.
Wait until the glaciers melt
Like every tear fallen from your eye.
Track Name: Dead Gods, Dead Masters
Dead gods, dead masters -
The world is spinning faster -
When it spins at all.

Dead seas, dead rivers -
In shame and fear we shiver.
We live after the fall.

Dig graves. Build tombs.
We make our own doom.
Hear the hangman's call.

Blind gods, dead masters -
At our hands disaster.
Maybe the end is near?

Poison rains in showers.
Let fall now the towers
And live no more in fear.

In man's distraction,
The Beast, already risen,
Smiles upon its throne.

With coins on our eyes
We crawl off to die.
The end has come and gone.

Dead gods, dead masters -
The world is spinning faster
And littered with our bones.
Track Name: Five Hands
O Mother Moon, I weep for thee:
Under the stars, beneath the leaves,
Your silver light doth comfort me.
O Mother Moon, please pray for me.

O Father Sky, I weep for thee:
We lost your songs, we cannot sing;
Forgive our heart; forgive our deeds.
O Father Sky, please pray for me.

O Sister Witch, I weep for thee;
Spreading the cards for all to see;
Your wisdom is a missing key.
O Sister witch, please pray for me.

O Brother Grave, I weep for thee;
At every turn you wait for me;
And every soul a falling leaf.
O Brother Grave, please pray for me.

O Black Madonna, I weep for thee;
Your heart doth light the path I seek;
Though I forget to pray to thee,
O Black Madonna, please pray for me.
Track Name: Black Night Wake
Hear the black dog moan;
Shake the black cat bone;
As you walk alone
In black night wake.

See black candles light
In the blackened shrine
New symbols shall we find
In black night wake.

It’s the black wolf’s call
And the night crow’s caw
That wraps around us all
In Black night wake.

In wind the black flag waves
And moonlight draws our gaze
Through the evening haze
In black night wake.
